 There are buildings that are simply old.

And then there are buildings that seem to remember.

458 South Main Street is one of those places.

For more than two centuries, this corner of Montrose has been part of the story of the community — a place where people came to work, to travel, to eat, to drink, to stay, and to gather.

The property dates to the earliest days of Montrose. In the early 1800s the Keeler Hotel was located here, giving the property its first connection to the Keeler name. 

Over the years, the name changed and the building changed with it-

Different names. Different owners. Different generations.

But the purpose remained remarkably familiar: a place for people to come together.

The Exchange Hotel became part of everyday life in early Montrose. It housed the town’s first schoolroom and first jail cell, and for generations the property served travelers and locals alike. Eventually, time and fire took their toll and the original structure was lost. A new building rose in its place, continuing the story on the same ground. 

In 1980, the property became the Montrose House, undergoing extensive renovations and beginning another chapter as a bed and breakfast.

And now, we’ve given it another chapter.

When we look at this building, we don’t just see brick, beams, windows, and walls.

We see everything that came before us.

We see the travelers who once arrived in town by horse and carriage. We see neighbors meeting over a drink, families sharing a meal, guests settling in for the night, and generations of Montrose residents making memories within these walls.

We wanted to honor that.

Keeler 1812 Tavern was created to bring the spirit of the old hotel back to life — while making room for today and celebrating a true tavern.

Our kitchen is rooted in scratch cooking and the belief that homemade can be celebrated in a restaurant.

Our dining rooms are meant for everything from a quiet dinner to a celebration around a crowded table.

Our guest rooms offer travelers a place to stay in the heart of historic Montrose.

And our gym brings wellness to the building — a modern purpose tucked inside a property with an incredibly old soul.

Keeler brings back one of the earliest names associated with the property and the family responsible for turning it into a place of hospitality.

1812 connects us to the earliest chapter of this building and to the founding story of Montrose itself.

Our General Manager—and daughter—Caleigh has spent years working in this building, when the opportunity came for us to purchase the establishment this summer, we were grateful to have Caleigh’s experience, knowledge of the building and genuine love for this community helping us through this next chapter. Her familiarity with the building and the people who gather here has made the transition especially meaningful! We (Scott & Jess) have a collective mixture of business,  industrial construction,  property development, food industry, hospitality and fitness & wellness experience under our belts, this endeavor allows us to put that all to use! We are so excited for the future and the memories to be made!

At Keeler 1812 Tavern, every dish begins with a commitment to quality. Chef Justin Jennings has carefully curated a menu centered on fresh ingredients, scratch-made recipes, and timeless flavors that bring comfort to every table.

Nearly every item on our menu is made in-house, from our hand-cut fries cooked in beef tallow to our house-made sauces, dressings, soups, desserts, and carefully crafted entrées. We believe great food starts with fresh ingredients and the care that comes from preparing it the right way.

Whether you're joining us for a perfectly grilled steak, a handcrafted burger, fresh salads with house made dressings, or one of our signature tavern favorites, every plate reflects Chef Jennings' passion for honest, homemade cooking and exceptional flavor.
